In 1911 some of D.H. Lawrence's poems and his story Odour of Chrysanthemums found their way, without his knowledge, to the desk of the editor of the English Review, Ford Madox Hueffer (later Ford). Ford was astonished and invited Lawrence to meet him, which the poet did with superb reluctance. Ford reinvents the meeting in 1937, recalling how, 'He had come, like the fox, with his overflood of energy - his abounding vitality of passionate determination that seemed always too big for his frail body.' Ford included the work in the English Review, talked up the new writer, and handed on his first novel, The White Peacock, to Messrs Heinemann. It is hard to understate the impact that Ford had on the literature of his age. His work as a magazine editor alone ensures him a place in the annals of Modernism; his patronage, his successful as much as his squandered aid - to Lawrence, Wyndham Lewis, Hudson, Pound, Conrad, Joyce, Stein, early Hemingway, Cummings, Rhys and others remembered and forgotten - is a huge chapter of literary history. As well as being an enabler, he was also a great critic, with the ability to read the present and re-read the past with independent vision. Series Editor: Bill Hutchings

During a Christmas leave in London, Ford Madox Ford attended a party at the French Embassy, 'a heavy blond man in a faded uniform', wearied by years of war, recalled to a longing for the life of a writer. The evening marks the beginning of a new phase of Ford's life, the years of It Was the Nightingale. Ford evokes the literary milieux of London, Paris and New York between the wars with sparkle, wit and energy. Recollections range across time in a subtle and flexible narrative that fuses fiction and memoir. A memory of a dark January day in Paris, in the weeks 'between dog and wolf', when Ford read the news of the death of the novelist John Galsworthy, triggers an exploration of the transition from an entire pre-war world: a ghost had passed, writes Ford, and Nancy Cunard steps forward 'like a jewelled tropical bird'. Here is James Joyce, whom Ford found dull company with his 'thin little jokes'; Ezra Pound playing Provencal songs on the bassoon; Gertrude Stein driving through the streets of Paris with the solemn 'snail-like precision' of a Pharoah. Behind the vivacity other ghosts, too, are always present: men killed and damaged in the war, mental breakdown and betrayal, out of which Ford was to create his best-loved novel, Parade's End.

Saga o dżentelmenie w najlepszym angielskim stylu Fascynująca opowieść o życiu Christophera Tietjensa, brytyjskiego arystokraty z zasadami – człowieka szlachetnego i życzliwego; przykładnego męża i dobrego ojca – a jednak osamotnionego w dążeniu do ideałów. Na podstawie książki powstał pięciokrotnie nominowany do nagrody Emmy, popularny serial telewizyjny produkcji BBC z Benedictem Cumberbatchem w roli Christophera Tietjensa.

Saga o dżentelmenie w najlepszym angielskim stylu I wojna światowa dobiega końca. Valentine Wannop i Christopher Tietjens, wraz z bratem i siostrzenicą Tietjensa, mieszkają w domku w Sussex. Ostatnia wiadomość to czwarty i ostatni tom cyklu Koniec defilady, ukazujący niepokojący obraz powojennego świata – zdegradowanego, pozbawionego wszelkich tradycji. LAST POST / Ford Madox Ford. - [miejsce nieznane] : Musaicum Books : Legimi, 2017.
Forma i typ
Last Post, the fourth and final volume of Parade's End, is set on a single post-war summer's day. Valentine Wannop and Christopher Tietjens share a cottage in Sussex with Tietjens' brother and sister-in-law. Through their differing perspectives, Ford explores the tensions between his characters in a changing world, haunted by the experience of war, facing an insecure future for themselves and for England. The Tietjens' ancestral home has been let to an American, its great tree felled; those like Tietjens who have served in the war find there is no place for them in a demoralised civilian society. The celebrations of Armistice Day have been replaced by the uncertainties of peacetime. Ford Madox Ford ( 1873 – 1939) was an English novelist, poet, critic and editor whose journals, The English Review and The Transatlantic Review, were instrumental in the development of early 20th-century English literature. He is now remembered best for his publications The Good Soldier, the Parade's End tetralogy and The Fifth Queen trilogy.

Ford Madox Ford spent his last years in the south of France, near Toulon. In Provence (1935), written four years before his death, he explores both the place and the idea of it: 'not a country nor the home of a race, but a frame of mind'. Suffused with a northern European's love for 'the Roman province that lies beneath the sun', Provence evokes scents of rosemary and thyme in the dry air, games of boules amid shadows of ancient ruins, the food and flinty local wines. Part memoir, part travel narrative, part history of the region, Provence displays Ford's wise, beguiling curiosity. Humorous, informed digressions take in the Albigensian heresy, bull-fighting, a favourite recipe for bouillabaisse, Henry James and Ellen Terry, the Troubadours and much else. Over the gaiety looms the coming barbarism, the 'fixed bayonets, machine guns, uniforms and arresting fists', against which Ford's Provence is a fragile, precious hope for civilised values. This edition is based on the authoritative 1935 Lippincott edition and includes the original illustrations by Ford's companion, the outstanding American artist Biala.

Ford Madox Ford can never quite keep out of it. The more self-effacing he seems, the more his the writing becomes: scenes of preternatural clarity. 'Memory doesn't work like that,' said one critic. Well, Ford's does. 'Truth to the impression' was his aim. How it seemed, how memory took it in, is more alive than how it 'actually' was, whatever that means. Memory is for Ford as for Wordsworth re-creation. His memoirs have the authority of fiction because they are half way between fiction and fact. Return to Yesterday (1931), his most fascinating memoir, follows on Ancient Lights and covers the years from 1894 to the outbreak of World War I - his transition from privileged godson of the Pre-Raphaelites to the great Modern writer and editor he became. Here he evokes England at large, and London in particular, its literary community, the political world of anarchists (the world of his friend Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent). If the Rossettis, Ford Madox Brown, Swinburne and Morris gave their blessing to his youth, it was Pound and Lawrence, Joyce and Rhys, who were blessed by his maturity. C.H. Sisson writes: 'Ford remains a profound influence on the poetry as on the prose of the century, for he found English literature poetical and left it spare.'

Some Do Not... Ford Madox Ford - "The best novel by a British writer . . . It is also the finest novel about the First World War" – Anthony Burgess Some Do Not … is an unforgettable exploration of the tensions of a society facing catastrophe, as the energies of sexuality and power erupt in madness and violence. Some Do Not … is the first volume of Ford Madox Ford's celebrated four-novel sequence tracing the trauma of the First World War through the experiences of Christopher Tietjens. The book introduces the major themes and characters of Parade's End. Tietjens, a brilliant civil servant from a wealthy Yorkshire land-owning background, is troubled by the reckless infidelities of his wife, Sylvia, and his own feelings for Valentine Wannop, a suffragette. The outbreak of war takes him to the Front, where he suffers shell-shock, and he returns to England to try and piece his life together. "The best novel by a British writer . . . It is also the finest novel about the First World War" – Anthony Burgess "The finest English novel about the Great War" – Malcolm Bradbury, Guardian "There are not many English novels which deserve to be called great: Parade's End is one of them." – W. H. Auden "If Parade's End is due for a revival it's not for its large historical or philosophical truths but because it is panoramic and beautifully written. It is a condemnation of the brutal senselessness and stupid waste of war." – Edmund White, New York Review of Books "Possibly the greatest 20th-century novel in English, I've come to think." – John Gray, New Statesman The first novel in the author's celebrated Parade's End Tetralogy explores the social tensions between marriage, sex, and honor at the outbreak of WWI. London, 1910s. Christopher Tietjens, a brilliant mathematician, shows little emotion when his wife, Sylvia, leaves him for her lover. But when she tires of the romantic pursuit and informs Christopher of her desire to return to him, it proves to be one more episode in their masochistic marriage—Sylvia's faithless torments yet again bested by Christopher's infuriating chivalry. Then, on a golfing weekend in Rye, Christopher meets a young suffragette by the name of Valentine Wannop, whose passion for ideas is matched by her beauty. In Valentine, Christopher sees the possibilities of life and love he has denied himself thus far. But the small dramas of their individual lives are suddenly interrupted when the world goes to war. Author Ford Madox Ford's masterful Parade's End series is "in human psychology and literary technique . . . as modern and modernist as they come." The first of four volumes, Some Do Not . . . sets in motion the complex web of attachments, passions, and resentments that unfold across an era of profound change (Julian Barnes, The Guardian).

The Good Soldier is a 1915 novel by English novelist Ford Madox Ford. It is set just before World War I and chronicles the tragedy of Edward Ashburnham, the soldier to whom the title refers, and his own seemingly perfect marriage and that of two American friends. The novel is told using a series of flashbacks in non-chronological order, a literary technique that formed part of Ford's pioneering view of literary impressionism. Ford employs the device of the unreliable narrator to great effect as the main character gradually reveals a version of events that is quite different from what the introduction leads the reader to believe. The novel was loosely based on two incidents of adultery and on Ford's messy personal life. The novel's original title was The Saddest Story, but after the onset of World War I, the publishers asked Ford for a new title. Ford suggested (sarcastically) The Good Soldier, and the name stuck. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked The Good Soldier 30th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2015, the BBC ranked The Good Soldier 13th on its list of the 100 greatest British novels. The Good Soldier is narrated by the character John Dowell, half of one of the couples whose dissolving relationships form the subject of the novel. Dowell tells the stories of those dissolutions as well as the deaths of three characters and the madness of a fourth, in a rambling, non-chronological fashion that leaves gaps for the reader to fill. The "plot" is not then the real story; the reader is asked to consider whether they believe Dowell and what part he truly played in how this "saddest story ever told" actually plays out.

The Good Soldier Ford Madox Ford - First published in 1915, The Good Soldier is Ford Madox Fords tragic tale of the relationship between two couples. The first couple is English, Captain Edward Ashburnham, the good soldier referenced in the title, and his wife Leonora. The two at first have a seemingly perfect marriage but over the course of the novel is revealed that a constant series of infidelities by Edward has driven Leonora to attempt to exert increasing control over Edwards affairs, placing great strain on their relationship. The second couple is American, John and Florence Dowell, who have been living abroad in Europe for quite some time. John, a wealthy American Quaker, is held romantically at a distance from his wife Florence, who feigns a heart condition so that she may carry on an affairs of her own. What ensues is a tragic series of events which is described by John as the saddest story ever told. Often cited as one of the greatest novels ever written, The Good Soldier presents the epitome of the unreliable narrator in John Dowell, leaving the reader wondering whether or not he is an innocent victim or a master of manipulation seeking to evoke the sympathy of his audience. This edition includes a biographical afterword.
