Stanley Kubrick adapted the novel into the film Barry Lyndon, released in 1975. Unlike the film, the novel is narrated by Barry himself, who functions as a quintessentially unreliable narrator. Crime and Punishmentfocuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas ofan impoverished ex-student in Saint Petesburg who formulates a plan to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker for her money. Before the killing, Raskolnikov believes that with the money he could liberate himself from poverty and go on to perform great deeds. However, once it is done he finds himself racked with confusion, paranoia, and disgust for what he has done. His moral justifications disintegrate completely as he struggles with guilt and horror and confronts the real-world consequences of his deed. Long established as one of the greatest novels, Madame Bovary has been described as a "perfect" work of fiction. Henry James wrote: "Madame Bovary has a perfection that not only stamps it, but that makes it stand almost alone: it holds itself with such a supreme unapproachable assurance as both excites and defies judgment." The realist movement was, in part, a reaction against romanticism. Heart of Darkness is a novel by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad about a narrated voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State in the so-called heart of Africa. Central to Conrad's work is the idea that there is little difference between so-called civilised people and those described as savages; Heart of Darkness raises questions about imperialism and racism. The title of The Idiot is an ironic reference to the central character of the novel, Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin, a young man whose goodness, open-hearted simplicity and guilelessness lead many of the more worldly characters he encounters to mistakenly assume that he lacks intelligence and insight. In the character of Prince Myshkin, Dostoevsky set himself the task of depicting "the positively good and beautiful man." The novel examines the consequences of placing such a unique individual at the centre of the conflicts, desires, passions and egoism of worldly society, both for the man himself and for those with whom he becomes involved. Hadji Murat is a short novel written by Leo Tolstoy from 1896 to 1904 and published posthumously in 1912 (though not in full until 1917). The protagonist is Hadji Murat, an Avar rebel commander who, for reasons of personal revenge, forges an uneasy alliance with the Russians he had been fighting. Bouvard und Pécuchet: Roman aus dem Nachlass Gustave Flaubert - Bouvard und Pécuchet öffnet während der Kindheit von Charles Bovary. Als Ausgestoßener in seiner neuen Schule passt Charles nicht dazu und wird verspottet. Als er älter wird, erfahren wir, dass er ziemlich langweilig ist und ihm in seinem Beruf, der Medizin, das Talent fehlt. Charles wird ein armer Arzt, der von seinen Kollegen nicht viel Respekt verdient. Seine Mutter bleibt sehr einflussreich in seinen Lebensentscheidungen; sie drängt ihn in die Medizin und überredet ihn, eine Witwe zu heiraten. Die Witwe stirbt kurz nach der Hochzeit und hinterlässt Charles viel weniger Geld, als er erwartet hatte.Kurz nach dem Tod seiner ersten Frau verliebt sich Charles in Emma, die Tochter eines seiner Patienten. Nach langer Zeit bittet Charles ihren Vater schließlich um Emmas Hand. Es findet eine aufwendige Zeremonie statt. Nach der Heirat ziehen Charles und Emma nach Tostes, wo Charles seine magere Praxis einrichtet. Leider ist Emma bald desillusioniert von ihrem Landleben und strebt nach mehr Romantik und Luxus. Nachdem Emma und Charles einen Ball besucht haben, der von einem wohlhabenden Adligen geworfen wird, ist sie besessen von der Idee, ein ausgeklügelteres und anspruchsvolleres Leben zu führen. Schließlich übernimmt ihre Besessenheit und versetzt sie in einen depressiven Zustand. Während dieser Krankheitsphase wird Emma schwanger und Charles beschließt, in eine neue Gegend zu ziehen, in der Hoffnung, Emmas Gesundheit zu verbessern und eine positive Zukunft für seine Familie zu verwirklichen.

A diferencia de otros libros, que se leen sin dificultad, Bouvard y Pécuchet es una novela que fue construyendo poco a poco a sus lectores. Pero también podría decirse que, en paralelo, generaciones de lectores fueron construyendo su importancia e imponiendo la idea de que se trata de un libro del todo singular dentro de la historia de la literatura mundial. Entre otras razones, porque a ella se le puede aplicar el planteo que Michel Foucault formuló para La tentación de San Antonio: se trata de un libro escrito sobre la base de una biblioteca. Jorge Fondebrider Hay, tal vez, otra clave. Para escarnecer los anhelos de la humanidad, Swift los atribuyó a pigmeos o a simios; Flaubert, a dos sujetos grotescos. Evidentemente, si la historia universal es la historia de Bouvard y de Pécuchet, todo lo que la integra es ridículo y deleznable. Jorge Luis Borges
