The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion and obsession with the beautiful former debutante Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald's magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream. Ulysses is a modernist novel by Irish writer James Joyce. It was first serialised in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 and then published in its entirety in Paris by Sylvia Beach on 2 February 1922, Joyce's 40th birthday. It is considered to be one of the most important works of modernist literature and has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement." Stephen attends school at Jesuit-run Clongowes Wood College, where the apprehensive, intellectually gifted boy suffers the ridicule of his classmates while he learns the schoolboy codes of behaviour. While he cannot grasp their significance, at a Christmas dinner he is witness to the social, political, and religious tensions in Ireland involving Charles Stewart Parnell that drives bitter wedges between members of his family, leaving Stephen with doubts over which social institutions he can place his faith in.[16] Back at Clongowes, word spreads that a number of older boys have been caught "smugging"; discipline is tightened, and the Jesuits increase use of corporal punishment. Stephen is strapped when one of his instructors believes he has broken his glasses to avoid studying; prodded by his classmates, Stephen works up the courage to complain to the rector Father Conmee, who assures him there will be no such recurrence, leaving Stephen with a sense of triumph.

Mit „Ulysses“ wurde James Joyce berühmt, die in „Dubliner“ versammelten 15 Kurzgeschichten sind das erste Prosawerk des irischen Jahrhundertliteraten. Das ist die einzige Möglichkeit, das Werk eines der größten Schriftsteller zu verstehen, nicht nur unserer Zeit, sondern aller europäischen Literatur.“ Sämtliche Geschichten spielen in Joyce’ Heimatstadt Dublin. Sie alle bieten mit suggestiver Kraft Einblicke in die in Dublin zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts herrschende lähmende Beengtheit und Erstarrung. Die Sehnsucht nach dem Ausbruch daraus gesteht Joyce seinen in unterschiedlichsten Milieus – der bürgerlichen Mittelschicht, politischen Clubs, der Zuhälterszene usw. – heimischen Figuren zu. Doch verwehrt er ihnen das Gelingen – sie müssen in ihrer aussichtslosen Lage verharren. So zeichnet Joyce das Bild einer ebenso spannungsgeladenen wie paralysierten Stadt. Ins Deutsche übertragen von Georg Goyert, der – in Abstimmung mit James Joyce – auch die erste Übersetzung des „Ulysses“ ins Deutsche besorgte. Für diese E-Book-Ausgabe der „Dubliner“ wurde der zuletzt 1968 im Suhrkamp-Verlag, Frankfurt, erschienene Text behutsam modernisiert.

Life is full of missed opportunities and hard decisions. Sometimes it’s difficult to know what to actually do. Dubliners creates an image of an ever movie city, of an ever moving exchange of people who experience the reality of life. A collection of 15 short stories by James Joyce all set in Dublin and first published in 1914. They form a naturalistic depiction of Irish Middle class life in around Dublin in the early years of the 20th Century. There are two types of stories in Dubliners. The first, and by far the most effective, are those associated with despair, nihilism and death. The second type deals with more ordinary aspects of modern life, the representation of the city and social exchanges. As a collection they provide an image of dark, murky city struggling to cope with the problems associated with rapid urbanisation.

Dubliners is a collection of fifteen short stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914. They form a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century. The stories were written when Irish nationalism was at its peak, and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences. They centre on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character experiences a life-changing self-understanding or illumination. Many of the characters in Dubliners later appear in minor roles in Joyce's novel Ulysses. The initial stories in the collection are narrated by child protagonists, and as the stories continue, they deal with the lives and concerns of progressively older people. This is in line with Joyce's tripartite division of the collection into childhood, adolescence and maturity.
